Denim Jeans –
from Cowboys to Mickey Mouse
The story of Levi Strauss
denim jeans as the brand that tamed the West is
famous. Originally designed for miners as a rough, rugged work pant that
would stand up to years of wear and tear, denim jeans
soon wound up on cowboys and ranchers for the same practical reasons.
It wasn’t until the glamorous mystique of the
American cowboy rode onto the silver screen that denim
jeans became something more – sometimes a fashion statement,
sometimes a form of rebellion, but always a favorite of American culture.
These days you can get
denim jeans with everything on them from sequins to Mickey Mouse. And
you can catch Mickey sporting jeans in quite a few situations, too. If you
are a collector of memorabilia, you probably have 1950’s style figurine of
Mickey in denim jeans and tee shirt a la James Dean. At
www.wbshop.com
you can also get great denim jackets with your favorite Looney Toons friends
to top off your favorite denim jeans.
Cuts and Styles for Every Body
Today’s denim jeans
aren’t the simple work pants of yesteryear. You can now find them literally
hundreds of styles and brands, including the originator, Levi Strauss & Co.,
who still makes the 501 style that started it all. JCPenney carries the
shrink-to-fit men’s classic for $42.00, but watch for sales, as they usually
go on special twice a year.
The price of denim jeans
varies widely depending on style, brand and where you buy them, but most
people are extremely loyal once they find a brand or style they like. Why?
Because sizes run so different from brand to brand and cut to cut; once a
person finds something that works, they tend to stick with it. Three very
big labels are Wrangler, Lee and Levi’s. If you like any of these, do some
comparison shopping. A few good prices we found were:
-
Levi Strauss Misses’ boot-cut
denim jeans for $19.95 at
www.Target.com
-
Lee Men’s regular fit stone-washed
denim jeans for $19.99 at
www.essentialapparel.com
-
Only $16.99 for Wrangler rugged wear rigid
in relaxed fit for men at
www.Sheplers.com. Sheplers is one of the largest online
outfitters of the Wrangler line there is, so if you have a favorite
style of denim jeans, look no further than
here.
Can I Make My Own
Denim Jeans?
In a word – Yes. With outstanding patterns on
the market and modern denim materials so much softer and easier to work
with, it’s easy for an experienced seamstress to make denim jeans if you
can’t find what you want in stores. In the past, the problems were primarily
that the material was too thick for machines to handle easily and that it
was difficult to work with.
Today’s more advanced sewing machines make it
easy to work with denim, with multiple settings for whatever weight of
fabric you are working on. In addition, denims are available in a wide range
of weights, many of them pre-washed to eliminate stiffness so that they’re
easy to work with while sewing.
If you want truly custom-made
denim jeans that will fit you like a glove, try
your hand at making a pair of your own. Your new “designer
denim jeans” will be the envy of your friends.
